Pronunciation of WAP

Controversy exists over how to properly pronounce WAP. The long or short "a" sound can be used. For example, John Windmueller writes:
- when WAP is properly pronounced, it rhymes with "lap". I'm not sure when or how this new-fangled, rhymes with "cop" pronunciation started. But which do you like more: laps or cops? I thought so.
Other WAP members pronounce WAP with an Oh or an Ahh sound. Usage since about 1997 or 1998 has been consistent with this long-vowel sound pronunciation.
